With the recent popularity of adult colouring books (fantastic idea, in my opinion!), I thought I'd try my hand at a line-drawn version of one of my favourite photos. If you'd like to have a little fun colouring this drawing, just right-click the image, save it and print it out. Happy colouring!

I'm looking at negative shapes in a different way today with cut paper and mixed media:

For many years I've had an interest in clayboard, and I've used craft varieties of it in the past. I like the challenge of subtraction to reveal my subject matter, rather than adding in order to create an image. Since I've been working recently with negative painting, I thought using a scratchboard technique would be an interesting variety on the theme.
With this painting I started with a white canvas, created a layer of black on top, then subtracted the black with an eraser to develop my image:

Monday's painting inspired me to do another negative painting, this time in digital oils:

I started this painting with the intention of focusing primarily on colour contrast and colour compliment, but my favourite parts ended up being the easy, free negative painting in the background!

Since I love fruits and vegetables so much, it's not surprising that I keep wanting to sketch and paint produce. Here's another delicious still-life:

This sunflower painting was an exercise in complimentary colour and texture:

Here is a painting from earlier in the week. The branches were created by painting the negative spaces in between, and then detail added at the end:

I'm mixing it up a bit more today with this still life – intense colour, underpainting, and the use of negative space:

I've been indulging in the dazzling colour and texture of flowers in bright sunlight today:
