Oh, those luscious, luscious new Painter brushes!! This piece was created using digital airbrush for the sky, and for the rest, just two digital oil brushes, tweaked to add jitter to the brush strokes:

I've been spending the last few days experimenting with Painter 2015's particle brushes. Fantastic! These brushes are physics-inspired, and very dynamic in the way they behave, allowing the artist to paint and draw in a very free way. I used several of these brushes in combination with traditional Painter media to create a very loose, flowing gestural figure drawing:

This week I've been experimenting with digital oils in Painter 12 for other projects, and thought I'd try it out in my portrait practice as well. I've incorporated two of the more challenging parts of my recent practice in this piece – a complex nose, and a profile.

This sketch was the last of 2014. I was a bit happier with this sketch than the last – better use of simple, descriptive lines!

Happy 2015!
I did a bit more portrait sketching over the holidays (after a wee break from the massive flurry of making Christmas gifts!), and I'm finding now that the process of drawing likenesses is becoming faster and I've gotten better at acuracy. Next, I'd like to move into portrait painting with pastels and acrylics.
Recently, I've been admiring the pastel portrait work of Alain Picard (not to mention the rest of his pastel work too!)... Something to aspire to!

Another aspect of faces that I really need a lot of practice in is drawing profiles. Somehow, I start out fine at the top of the head, and inevitably, it all falls apart around the nose, lips and chin. So, today I practiced several profiles by roughing out shapes and volumes first, then refining the sketch. Amazing how well that process works for so many things!
I'm going to take some time off over the holidays to relax, finally get rid of this virus, and hopefully have some time for play!
Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and happy new year to all!!

I'm still battling a nasty cold that's making me feel like I'm thinking through cotton wool. So, back to the comfort and security of painting rocks (weird, I know!):

Today's sketch was another exercise in incorporating into a portrait the skills I've practiced recently. There are parts of this I like, and other parts I'm very critical of. Such is life. I blame it on the pre-Christmas rush, and a brewing cold...
Tomorrow is another opportunity!

I'm back to portraits today, using what I've learned about noses recently to sketch better faces:

My lovely sister donated her nose to the sketching cause today!
