My next step was to move on to the green brassica leaves, laying in local colours. These leaves were a little tricky to paint because they are large, robust and shiny and reflect light in a very particular way. The surfaces facing the light reflect an almost grey green, and as they turn away from the sun they look darker and a much more saturated green colour:

Next I started to work some of the detail into the yellow leaves:

My current painting is one I’ve been thinking about making for a long time. In the reference image I used I loved how bright sunlight on a brassica plant created such interesting shapes in the deep shadows. This seemed like a perfect opportunity to do some negative painting.
To begin I painted a green underpainting with some intense yellow washes in the upper right of the canvas. To help define the largest shapes and give me a few landmarks to work with, I painted in the darkest darks and sketched in some details for later. Here’s the canvas at that stage:

The finishing work on this painting was an accumulation of a lot of very small changes. I added a couple more greens and a few spots of orange to the sun-lit foliage and worked some grey-blue into the shadows in the tree trunks. I wanted to capture the bright glow and colourful aura of the sun coming through the trees – a characteristic of the photographic process, I know, but interesting nonetheless – so I painted in the general shape and then added a warm orange-coloured corona and few subtle blue rays of light. This might have been the trickiest part of the painting, but by manipulating the colours in the objects directly surrounding the sun burst I was able to create a pretty decent-looking glow around what was otherwise just an area of white paint. To balance out the drama of the sun burst I deepened a few of the blues in the sky and added the same colour to the shadows. The balance was just about right, and I called this painting done.

Today I’ve laid in a couple of mid-tone greens and an olive colour for the foliage, and I’ve started work on some detail in the tree trunks:

This week I’m starting on a new landscape painting as a commission. The reference image I’m using (the client's photo) shows just how complex the subject matter is:

My challenge with this piece is to try to simplify some of the shapes and colours so that there is a clear focal point and the scene doesn’t end up being a whole lot of busy lines. To that end I sharpened up the reference image and increased the contrast slightly so that my darks and lights were well established. With that accomplished I decided that I could best tackle this piece using negative painting.
I did an underpainting of dioxazine purple, divided the canvas with a grid and sketched in some of the landmarks, then spent a fair bit of time painting in the sky holes:

With the lightest areas painted in and the underpainting to use for the darkest darks I now have a much better sense of where to go from here.

This week I’ve been working on all the small details on the painting, tidying up shapes and lines and sharpening edges where necessary. I’ve got a couple small things to finish, but I’m very close to being finished. Here’s how the piece looks right now:

I made a few changes to adjust colours throughout the painting, then went to work on the large rings in the bottom half:

I’m happily back working on my latest painting, blocking in local colour. Here’s where it’s at right now:

After the walls were painted and the darker green accents painted on columns and doorways, we painted black accents throughout the set, including baseboards and doorframes. Our other accents were gold and silver, often seen in Art Deco designs. A couple of Art Deco-inspired painting were placed on the walls, along with a mirror and sconces, all in the appropriate style.
The very last task to be done the week before the first performance was to paint the floor. We decided on a medium grey for the base colour to be used throughout in order to compliment the stylized design that would be the highlight of the stage floor. The first step was to mark out the floor design in chalk lines, then tape out and make note of the shapes to be painted:

We painted the design with a combination of the darker green from the set, black, and a soft, warm pink. After the design was finished we made one small change by deepening the pink, as the stage lights were bound to wash out most of the rosy colour in the initial paint we chose. Here’s the grey base colour and the finished floor design (with the tape still in place):

The wall sconces were wired and lit, a chandelier was added and the set pieces placed. Here’s the finished set with stage lights on:

Being in on the planning and creation of a set from start to finish has been a fascinating experience. We had an extremely talented and hardworking group working on this show, and I’m indebted to all of them for teaching me some of what they know!
