We spent a day in Assisi during our stay in Italy. This was a particularly beautiful piece of architecture surrounded by an ancient olive grove:

Today I did a line and wash painting in preparation for my next pastel. I find studies like this help a lot when my subject matter is highly detailed, as in this case. The three trees in the middle ground have many small branches radiating from the main trunks, but after some refining I've decided not to include them for simplicity's sake. This painting helped me decide on the pastel's final composition and established the most important lights and darks.

This is some artwork for a short story that I wrote:

A melancholy little leaf watercolour, and a study of a snow-covered branch as we work our way up to 23cm of snow here at home...
I think I'll raid my photos and paint only sun-filled landscapes from now on :)

I'm still trying to become more competent and faster at drawing figures and facial features. Today, I've been practising drawing eyes – practice (and learning anatomy) does help!

One of the supplies I bought yesterday was copic markers, a pretty fancy schmancy item that I otherwise wouldn't have purchased if it hadn't been for my birthday gift certificate! I bought a fairly limited collection of twelve colours, and today I've been practising with them by drawing this portrait:

Last week I received three art instruction books in the mail, and I've been taking the past couple of days to flip through them. Maggie Price's pastel work is such an inspiration to me, particularly the way her paintings seem to almost vibrate with gorgeous colour. I purchased two of her books, Painting with Pastels: Easy Techniques to Master the Medium, and Painting Sunlight and Shadow with Pastels: Essential Techniques for Brilliant Effects.
I've watched video tutorials of pastelist Richard McKinley and enjoyed his subtle, nuanced way with pastels, so I bought Pastel Pointers: Top 100 Secrets for Beautiful Paintings.
I would recommend any books from Maggie Price and Richard McKinley for artists who want to learn how to make their pastel paintings really sing!
Happily, I recently received an art supply gift certificate for my birthday, so I've invested in some of the pastel supplies that I still needed, including hard stick pastels, a few extra soft pastels, and vine charcoal for sketching.
Off to put some of what I've learned into practice!
This is a colour study I did for my next pastel painting. My reference is a beautiful photo we took of a sun-drenched pasture in Italy at La Cappella farm house.

Yet another style tryout for my graphic novel:
