One of the other projects I made for Christmas were these Christmas tree ornaments. The idea for these came from online searches for ways to re-use household items.
The sleds are made from popsicle sticks cut and hot-glued together, then primed, painted and embellished with snow glitter and little jingle bells.
The other two sets of ornaments use regular light bulbs and those fat, round bathroom vanity light bulbs. Since we seemed to have a plethora of used light bulbs hanging around waiting to be recycled, this seemed like the perfect project! I cleaned the bare bulbs with rubbing alcohol, then primed and painted them. When the paint was dry I used the cuffs of a couple pairs of holey socks to make the hats.
All the decorations had string hot-glued to them for hangers, and they were ready to go!

I’ve been spending the past couple of weeks experimenting with some acrylic negative painting ideas I’ve had on hold since the fall. While I’m working I’ve been taking some photos of my progress, which I’ll share soon on the blog.

In the meantime I thought I’d post some photos of some of the things I worked on in November and December for Christmas presents.

I’ve done a variety of felting in the past, and I thought I’d try needle felting this Christmas. These earrings were made from twisting and wrapping short lengths of wool roving, then needle felting them into small, compact balls. There was a certain amount of colour mixing that happened when I used different colours of wool, so the end result was sometimes unexpected!
When the wool balls were finished, I used silver end caps and findings to dress them up a bit and make them into feather-light earrings:

Yes, it’s come to that time of the year where you get blog posts of whatever the heck I’m working on for presents, because that’s all I have time for! Today’s post is actually art as present packaging, so I thought it might be worth posting. I did a little black ink doodling on paper, then folded them into origami boxes and lids.

This is my last post for 2017, so Merry Christmas and happy holidays, no matter what you’re celebrating!! See you in 2018!

Here’s the finished painting that I first blogged about on December 1. Deepening the blues and purples helped to make the oranges and yellows look even more vibrant. Amazing what working with complimentary colours will do!

So much of what I’m working on right now is under wraps until Christmas, but here’s what I was working on yesterday. Definitely some colour mixing going on here, and maybe sculpture as well?

Here’s another fun, quick gesture for a warm-up today:

I’ve been so busy with Christmas projects that there’s been little time to just sketch, so these two gestures were fun, quick and relaxing to do:

Here’s a commission I’m currently working on. The objects in the foreground are challenging to paint realistically in low light, as the local colours are considerably darker than how my eye registers them. There’s still more subtle brushwork to do on the sky, but I’m close to calling this one finished:

For a challenge, I’ve been experimenting with a digital sculpting program. I had to make this a real challenge of course, so I’m starting with arguably the most difficult but personally enjoyable subject matter – portraits. Here's a work in progress:

Today I practiced some quick, basic gestures using a nib pen and ink, then from those developed the more detailed gestural drawing on the left.
