Here’s today’s warm-up sketch. I started with fast gesture lines to describe movement, then worked in simple shapes before refining the sketch:

I’ve been trying out mandala drawings over the past few days, and this was the first to really come together the way I wanted it to. I’ve also been thinking ahead to using one of my mandala designs in a future wood carving/ wood burning project. Time to break out my geometric stencils!

Here’s the second page of gesture drawings that I did the other day, along with a couple of quick thumbnail sketches of my surroundings:

I went out for coffee today to get away from my desk, soak up some fresh air and sunshine, and practice my outdoor gesture drawing. People on the move are a great challenge for speeding up my drawing (and memory) skills:

Here’s a quick gesture I did today as a drawing warm-up:

Here’s another painting from last fall’s acrylics class. Looking at this piece again, I’m quite happy with the energy in the brush strokes, as well as the contrast between the crimson and green. I love saturated colour, and using orange as an underpainting seemed to really pump up the intensity of the rest of the colours.

On a recent trip to the beach I did some very fast gesture work of people walking and playing, something that’s a real challenge when the subject in question is in constant motion! This was certainly a good exercise for speed.

Here’s another try at the negative painting mock-up. This time I’ve used a much more limited colour palette and simpler shapes:

I’ve been working away at a negative painting, with mixed results. This digital version of the painting was meant to be a mock-up or working sketch for what will eventually be an acrylic painting on canvas. I’ve had a very specific colour palette in mind since the beginning, and although I’ve kept to that, this painting hasn’t got the right balance of colour that I’d like. I was aiming for more blue with “sweet spots” of red and orange.
Ultimately, I’ll likely start another mock-up for the acrylic painting, but there are areas I really like about this painting in its own right. There’s a nice buzz of energy between the complimentary blue and orange, and some of the subtler negative shapes ended up working really well.
Here it is anyway, warts and all:

If there’s anything I’ve learned from doing caricature sketching over the past couple of weeks, it’s that it can go really well, or disastrously bad, depending on how much I’m over-thinking things. I’ve spent a week practising caricatures of all sorts of actors and comedians, and failing miserably at pretty much everything I’ve attempted. I’m still trying to work out why some of my sketches have been more successful than others, but for now I’ll keep trying and share with you my work from today.
I’ve been listening to a podcast about the X-Files, so I thought that David Duchovny might be a good subject for caricature practice:
