The painting's getting to that point where I'll need to call it finished before I overwork it. I think it still needs a bit of deep, dark colour in certain places... Maybe one more layer?

Here are the next couple of stages in my painting. I worked clockwise to start cutting in shapes using increasingly saturated pigment:

Today's painting started with a soft gradient of five colours from warm red to green. Next, I began pulling out shapes that had appeared in the drying pigment. When that layer dried, I used another, more intense glaze of colour to draw out additional shapes, pushing back certain areas of the painting as I went along:

Here is the final painting, with many layers of fiery colour:

I placed a few guidelines for my next few layers of colour, then painted the negative spaces using a bit more red with every layer. The second image here shows about 4-5 layers of painted negative space. I'll probably paint at least another 3-4 layers before this painting is finished.

This is the first stage of today's exercise. I used analogous colours to first create a wet-in-wet wash of colour, and after that layer dried, I began carving out negative shapes using a transparent wash of orange. The next phase of the painting will be to begin painting in layers of shapes under this first layer.

Today's work was to practice creating colour luminance with a limited palette and pure pigments:

One of the most dynamic parts of negative painting is the layering of shapes. The shapes themselves can be arranged simply yet creatively, but the real star is the negative spaces that are created in between the shapes. Here's one of the exercises I did to practice layering shapes and pushing them back in space ( I used my new radish sprout leaves as a simple shape to work with):

I'm working on the planning stages of another painting by creating negative images of various photos I've taken. Here's one possibility:

This painting was an exercise in working with the lines and gestures inherent in my subject matter. Here, I painted some directional lines using a wet-in-wet technique, let the painting dry, and then worked to bring out negative shapes using pure pigments and layers of colour:
