It's been cold, drizzly and sodden for several days now, and my only option for painting in nature was to sketch and paint one of my planters from the door of the balcony. Rain, rain, go away!!

I finally finished the watercolour for last week's boat drawing. One of the toughest things to do is anticipate how light the watercolour will dry, and try not to overwork the pigment... Still trying!

This piece was done on the back of a sketchbook painting where watercolour had seeped through in faint patches. I used those coloured shapes as inspiration for this pencil sketch:

My preliminary sketch for today's watercolour ended up taking me most of the afternoon. Suffice it to say, drawing boats is not my forte! In any case, I thought I'd share the sketch as a lead-up to the finished watercolour (please pardon the faintness of the image – 'twas the best my scanner could do with a 3H pencil drawing):
