Here is the first stage of Fire Hall No. 1. I needed to establish landmarks by inking the major shapes first. The next step will be to render the overall texture of the building. I'm trying to not over-do the heavy lines/outlines at this stage - my goal is to describe as much detail using texture rather than outline.

Yesterday we attended Joy To the World, an annual ecumenical music service that involves six church choirs from neighbouring parishes. This is the second year that I've elected to sketch the evening's festivities while I listened to some great music!

I'm juggling three (or is it four?) projects today. This was a little work-break sketch, just for fun:

I reminisced today about Nova Scotia's late, lush fall and gorgeous scenery as I painted Buchanans Music Centre in Mahone Bay:

I've been doing some tonal studies in preparation for a commissioned pen and ink drawing of Calgary Fire Hall No. 1, an impressive sandstone structure built in 1911. When it was built, the fire hall was state-of-the art, and I learned that the hose tower to the right was used to hang and dry the canvas hoses in use at the time. Fire Hall No. 1 was in continuous use until 1973, and now houses a Budget Rent a Car.

My reference for this piece was a photo we took at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary last summer, before the flood devastated so much of it. Hopefully we'll be able to visit again this summer, since the park is such a fantastic place to walk and sketch in!

Planning for another pastel. Warm, bright sunlight and cool, deep shadow always makes for a great pastel painting...

The final stage of the painting was to put reflection of the mountains and sky in the water. I then made a few last changes to the water colour, painted in some details in the shoreline, and added texture to the forested slopes. I'm observing the 75% rule, and quitting before I over-work this painting. Overall, I'm pleased with the result.

I worked on the mountain ranges today, building up several layers of glazes in order to achieve subtle variations of colour. Photographing my work is sometimes particularly helpful in giving me a fresh view of the work I've done. Already I can see that I need to push back the mountains in the centre of the piece to better achieve atmospheric perspective.

My work on the painting over the past couple of days has mainly entailed getting local colour and colour temperature correct. Today I placed the clouds in, starting with basic shapes and gradually building up density with subsequent layers of paint:
