I worked today on laying in shapes and local colour. At this point the piece is still at an awkward stage, but it's getting there:

Today I've been developing the colour in the sky. I'm fighting against that niggling voice in my head that tells me I ought to cover all traces of orange in the sky, because letting the underpainting show through is what makes this piece look alive!

I did the underpainting for this new piece today. General consensus in my house is that the orange is nice, and I should keep it this way!

Hooray! This is my 500th blog post! I've made a few changes to the Azure Dragonfly Meanderings site, including a bio I've posted to the right.
In order to allow myself a bit more time for commissions and on-going paid projects, I've decided to modify my blogging schedule slightly and post new work to the blog on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You know, life/work balance and all. Or work/work balance?
Today I've created a collage from snippets of our brief time in Halifax:

We had lunch one day at the Wooden Monkey in Halifax. The food and drinks were great, and the restaurant was a cozy retreat on a wet, rather chilly day after we visited the Citadel.

This house in Mahone Bay N.S. was nestled on a hill, surrounded by trees of every kind that were just beginning to show their spectacular array of fall colours:

We saw quite a few starlings while on our trip to Nova Scotia. I couldn't wait to paint this one, especially after it was so good to pose for a picture!

One of the clockwork androids from Dr. Who. While I was painting this guy, it occurred to me that he would have made a fantastic Halloween costume. Next year?

The first step in a commissioned painting of Goat Pond that I'm working on – planning the colour I'll use in the underpainting. I've chosen a mix of orange and burnt sienna to liven up the mostly cool greens and blues in my reference photo:

Our visit to Peggy's Cove was such a memorable experience. Everywhere we looked was a photo or drawing opportunity. Today I tried to capture this particular scene with efficient line and simple colour:
