I’ve spent the week juggling a whole bunch of different art-related projects, including some work for a theatre company I’m volunteering with. Here’s a sneak peek of one of those projects:

To be honest, I’m ridiculously pleased with this first print of the caribou linocut. I wasn’t entirely sure what result I’d get from the sharp, shallow cuts I’d made to describe the texture of the fur, but I’m very happy with it. Beginner’s luck, perhaps?

I started a new linocut, this time of a caribou. I did the initial image transfer using white chalk, then made the lines a bit more apparent using pen. This time around, I found that having the pen lines there as a guide helped me preserve the small details, of which there are many!
I have a feeling that after the first print I’ll need to make a few minor changes, but here’s how the linocut looks right now:

I’m happy with the first few prints from the chickadee linocut. I wasn’t sure how much of the carved background would be apparent when I printed, but I like the texture that I got all around the bird. I may not do the same thing next time, but it’s interesting to see the results.

Before I could call it finished I made just a few last changes to the painting, including a bit more refinement to the leaf stems, and painting in some extra colour into the blue background in order to make it look less flat. Any more work to this piece is going to feel like nit-picking, so I’m dragging myself away and calling it done!

This week I’ve been working on the fine details in the painting, deepening some of the darks and intensifying colour. This painting is nearing the end, so I’m being a bit careful not to overwork it. Here’s where the piece is at today:
