Lots of small, detailed work today on the painting. I’ve been working on strengthening the shapes in the foreground and beginning to blur the edges of the other shapes to push them into the background:

Here’s a little caricature I’ve been working on today:

I’ve made quite a bit of headway on the painting so far this week. Right now I’m laying in landmark shapes and being careful to make sure that the overall colour palette is harmonious throughout the painting:

I’ve been working on a new negative painting this week. I started with an orange underpainting, then transferred my image onto the canvas with watercolour pencil. The first stage of the negative painting was to place some of the initial negative shapes in blue (pictured below). Already, placing the orange and blue together is creating a nice visual buzz!

Here’s a little concept sketching I’m doing today while I plan a new painting:

There have been a lot of changes to the painting from mid-week to the finished piece. I wanted to keep the focus on the lower half of the painting with it’s stronger shapes and impasto texture, so I toned down the blue in the upper half, leaving the underlying texture to tie in with the rest of the piece. I also softened the transition between the upper and lower half by adding in a few deep, saturated blues and softer, lighter ochres in the middle section.
Although the piece certainly has some saturated colour, which I love, it’s still primarily a more subdued palette than I’m used to painting with, which was a great exercise in colour restraint!

Here was my painting progress mid-week. I worked on adding some warmer colours to the lower half and balancing them out with a warmer, wider area of colour in the midground. It was at this point that I felt the upper part of the painting was competing a bit too much with the lower half, so I decided to knock back the vibrancy of the blue up top. I’ll share more details and the final photos of the painting in my next blog post.

Lots of work today on the foreground of the painting. I’ve used a wide palette knife to create impasto shapes, leaving some of the dark blue underpainting showing to help delineate certain areas:

Here’s where I’m at today. I’ve deepened the value of the foreground, which will serve as an underpainting. The upper part of the canvas has been painted with a palette knife for some visual texture, but at this stage I’m just experimenting with what might work. All of this may change once the lower part of the image is painted!
