And now for something completely different. A fast painting from our trip to Assisi:

I took the masking off the painting, then worked for a while on painting in cool washes of colour for the shadows on the white-washed bike. I was considering using some additional washes of colour in the rocks in the foreground, but I decided that the texture created by the masking fluid was much more interesting. Here is the finished painting:

Just before removing the masking I brushed in some dark colours and shadows, then intensified the colour in the bottles. The next step is to remove the masking and see what I've got!

Here's the second-last pour, with most of the areas of cool and warm colour finalized. At this stage I added coarse salt and some spritzes of rubbing alcohol to the wash for texture. A few more details in the shadows, and I'll be ready to pull off the masking!

I masked some of the areas I wanted to leave with a thin wash of colour, and then proceeded with the second pour. This pour established most of the darks and lights. I tried to keep the colours as pure as possible by not letting them blend too much. Another application of frisket, mainly on the lighter areas of rock, and I'm ready for the third pour.

The painting's first pour was a very subtle one – just enough to establish areas of cool and warm colour. The yellow colour in the bike is where I applied my very stinky liquid frisket... I can't wait until the masking is done!

A quick sketch while I was out and about today:

I'm back to a more traditional sort of painting this week, with a watercolour pour. This one is a bit smaller in scale, but should be quite detailed and textural. Here is the sketch I'm starting with:

A quick watercolour and pastel painting of the early-morning view we had from Castello di Proceno in Italy:
