This painting wasn't especially fast (about 2 hours), but it was fun to play with goopy digital oils!

This pastel took about an hour, with me trying all the while not to fuss too much. The battle continues!

I thought I'd try a fast drawing this time. This one was done in digital marker, and took a mere 45 minutes!

This painting took a bit longer, as the skin tones were trickier to get just right. This was painted from a photo we took in Maui back a few years ago:

I was a bit faster with this painting, and had it done in an hour and a half. I'm trying hard to get in the most essential shapes and colours that describe the form, rather than labouring over fine detail.

I thought I would bravely try a fast painting involving people, and it certainly was an interesting experiment. I found that it's much more difficult to paint physical gestures quickly with just a few strokes of paint. This painting ended up taking me almost two hours – not quite as fast as I would have liked, but I'm determined to get faster!

This painting was another fast one, but this time around I used subject matter I hadn't painted or drawn before. Happily, I was still able to paint this in a little over an hour. Fast painting is great at making me pare down a photo into colour, value and composition – all of the elements that inspired me to paint it in the first place.

Another fast painting, this time done in an hour and fifteen minutes. I still found myself starting to fuss with details, so I had to be mindful that these pieces are meant to be fast and loose, not necessarily precise!

Okay, THIS was a fast painting. This one took just under an hour, and boy, was it fun! It kind of does feel like you're being chased – a little bit of an adrenaline rush and a stress-buster, which I can certainly use! I used one of my favourite photos as subject matter, which helped, since I was already very familiar with the shapes and composition:

On the weekend I read an article that suggested you should paint like you're being chased. The idea is that you paint quickly and intuitively, without over-thinking your process. I thought I'd like to try that. The result was a painting that took me over five hours to complete. Hm. More like painting like you're out for a lazy meander...
My intentions were good, but I don't think I quite accomplished the task. I will try again!
