This musician was also in the group that we stopped to listen to in the square. I thought I'd give digital oil painting a go – I really enjoy the looseness it brings to my work!

I've been doing lots of vector drawings for a client lately, but took a break today to sketch something fast and fun. Here is a quick drawing of a street musician we photographed while in Florence, Italy last September:

The past couple of weeks have been pretty busy with client work, so it's nice to sketch something just for fun. Okay, back to the grindstone!

And now for something completely different. Back to basics:

My Luna scratchboard drawing is done!
The colour wash was pretty fast to put in. I kept the colour pure but diluted, and worked on building up colour with consecutive washes. To be honest, this part of the process was a mystery before I started – I've only read about painting colour washes into scratchboard – but I'm very happy with the results!

A quick sketch for the blog while I put in some long hours on client work:

The scratchboard part of my Luna drawing is now complete. Today I finished some details in the far-ground, and tightened up some tonal values that weren't quite right. One of the great things about black scratchboard is that if you make a mistake, you can always fix it with a thin layer of black India ink. I realized that a few of the darker areas were lost in the drawing, so I put them back in, then worked a bit over top. Because the ink is more reflective than the scratchboard surface, you'll likely be able to spot those little fixes in this photo.
My next step will be to lay in colour with a watercolour wash.

So close to being finished! Today I drew in the bulk of the foliage. All that's left is to fine-tune the details and make sure my tonal values are correct. After that, I wash in some watercolours!

Yesterday I worked extensively on my sketch of Luna. The quality of light in the piece is becoming more apparent now as I start to work in multiple layers of line.
A quick note about my process: For scratchboard drawings, I've found it helpful to work using a grey-scale version of my reference photo. This allows me to keep my greys as accurate as possible.
