There’s one more thing I wanted to do to prep for my most recent painting, and that’s to create a simple greyscale version. Not only is this an important initial step to make sure I have good tonal contrast in the composition, but it’ll be good reference as I work on the painting, to make sure I stay on track!

Today I’m studying the gesture and curve of several complex figure poses. In each instance, the gestural ink sketch on the left is a little warm-up to remind myself of the pose, while the “bean” sketch to the right helps describe the particular kind of twist in each pose:

I’m planning out a new painting based on photo reference from a beach near our home. A thumbnail is always helpful to make necessary adjustments in colour, composition and scale. It’s also a good warm-up to lose the nerves before beginning a new painting!

Some hits and misses in my last few continuous line drawings:

I’m continuing on with my quick gestures, working to capture likenesses in thirty seconds to a minute per sketch:

Continuous line gestures are a really great, challenging exercise to render a subject accurately while working as simply and economically as possible. Sometimes this works out well, sometimes not so much. Here’s the round-up from today:

Today I’m working on sketching correct form when drawing noses. I’m starting with a simple shape to determine direction and mass, then focusing on details:

I’m revisiting portrait practice using a charcoal pencil and a fat blending stump, excellent tools for rendering faces from black and white photography references:

Here’s the finished gouache piece from earlier in the month. I spent some time adjusting colour values, saving the fine details in the shop window and the two signs for the end:
