The Unicorn, a sailing training vessel, is the only all-female crewed tall-ship in the world. We photographed it while we were sailing in Lunenburg harbour last Ocotober. Though I know virtually nothing about sailing vessels, I was drawn to the beauty and elegant lines of the Unicorn.

Vegetable market study for a larger watercolour. I'm itching to get back to my studio to paint this piece on proper watercolour paper!

This was the last, dwindling sunflower in one of my Mum's many beautiful bouquets:

I wasn't going to include this sketch in the week's series because I wasn't sure I liked it very much, but on second look I decided that the simple lines I used to create the face's profile worked better than any of the others in describing the character. I guess I just needed time to appreciate what was there!

This was the character sketch I was most pleased with. Despite a few lines that meandered a bit, the silhouette and general impression of the model was apparent in the end:

Crowd sketches drawn from a distance are even more of a challenge. One tiny error changes the whole face:

This sketch fit the bill a bit better – fewer lines to describe the figure:

I've been practicing pen and ink character sketches, with the intention of being as thrifty with descriptive lines as possible:

Getting back into blogging after the longest two weeks I can remember...
I had the urge to create a larger orbit drawing so that I could incorporate some nice watercolour textures into the shapes using a spritz of rubbing alcohol:

When you've spent almost a week at the hospital waiting for a loved one to have surgery, the options for viable sketching subjects can run out quickly. I've opted to look for subject matter wherever I can. This was my view across the table from my sister, who was working in vain (and not happily), trying to make some headway on a jigsaw puzzle:
